GUNNISON, Colo. – Fire restrictions will be lifted on public lands managed by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Gunnison Field Office in San Juan and Hinsdale counties on Friday, July 13, 2018. Stage 2 Fire Restrictions will remain in effect for all other BLM-lands within the Gunnison Field Office in Gunnison, Montrose, Ouray and Saguache counties. This change is in response to significant moisture observed at high elevations.
“We recognize that the higher elevations in this area have received substantial rainfall and feel comfortable excluding them from current fire restrictions,” said Brandon Lewis, BLM Fire Management Officer for the Southwest Colorado Fire and Aviation Management Unit. “However, much of the lower elevation lands have not received adequate moisture to justify a change in fire restriction levels. We will continue to closely monitor fire danger criteria to ensure we are implementing the appropriate restrictions in the right locations.”
Although these specific BLM lands may not be under fire restrictions, many adjacent jurisdictions currently have fire restrictions in place. The public is reminded to be aware of their location and are encouraged to adhere to all respective fire restrictions.
Visit https://www.blm.gov/programs/public-safety-and-fire/fire-and-aviation/regional-information/colorado for maps and updates to local BLM fire restrictions. The BLM continuously monitors the conditions throughout the area and will modify the restrictions as needed.
