Dolores, Colo. – The lightning-caused East Canyon Fire was reported to the Durango Interagency Dispatch Center on September 10, 2018 and is currently one acre in size. The fire is located about six miles south of Mancos, Colorado and west of Cherry Creek in the East Canyon drainage. Resources on scene include one hotshot crew, one hand crew, two fire engines and two helicopters. Single-engine air tankers were used to apply fire retardant around the fire. Fire managers have placed three fire engines in the Cherry Creek area as a precautionary measure; however, there are no immediate threats to structures or private property.

Smoke may remain visible as firefighters work towards containment of the fire. The public is asked to avoid the fire area to allow crews and aircraft to safely access and engage in suppression efforts.
